Artist Statement
The task of creating a unique range of images for the Bruce Munro “Tropical Light” exhibition has challenged me outside of my normal work by encouraging a focus on our unique details. Each image I am creating is connected to its own illuminated sculpture, which has been inspired by our stunning tropical wet season and the Darwin lifestyle. From a photography perspective, I’ve had to focus on specific features within an image as opposed to capturing the bigger picture or landscape as a whole. It’s been a great opportunity to share the little things that are great about the wet season in the Top End!
This project has given me the chance to share my admiration for our ancient yet timeless environment: the gorges and coastline that surrounds the Darwin region are featured through these light installations. My images include dazzling sunset skies, storms, local flora and fauna, and has given me the chance to appreciate the connections between our environment and our city. I believe “Tropical Light” is a great tribute to the things that makes Darwin unique.
I have been photographing the landscape and light around the Top End area for over ten years now, and it is through projects such as this that keeps my passion alive and ever-changing. My involvement in this exhibition has given me the inspiration to create images I would not have seen before. My aim for this series images is to create a deeper connection between the viewer and the “Tropical Light” features, sharing the characteristics of Darwin that have inspired Bruce Munro’s works here.
This photograph is one of an exclusive series of eight photographs that Louise has created. This photograph has been inspired by Bruce Munro’s ‘Pukul Lima’ illuminated sculpture that will be installed in Raintree Park. Bruce Munro’s aim of ‘Pukul Lima’ is to literally create a chilled-out time and place for people to meet and converse
This angle of the Raintree, photographed during the wet season, shows how big these trees are in Darwin. It shows this as a mighty tree, something imposing and significant in the landscape that people would have been sitting around eons ago.
